It is a case of the technology has improved. Paper gaskets are not used by most mechanics for the same reason cork valve cover and oil pan gaskets are not used. RTV holds up better and when properly used as in the correct type for the oil in question provides a far superior seal to a paper gasket.
I believe the point that salad and myself are trying to convey is that RTV is not a cure-all or an absolute necessity to use in all sealing applications.
It's not a substitute for good workmanship, and in many cases can be a hinderance when a part needs replacing.
I would much rather replace a thermostat gasket that had been previously applied using GasgaCinch or Indian Head Gasket shellac than one that was installed using RTV.
Is it new technology? Yes. Is it applicable to the old technology of our 4.0s and differential covers? Sometimes.
As a matter of fact, the newest valve cover gaskets and oil pan gaskets require nothing more than a dab of RTV in a few areas or none at all...

considering the water factor wouldn't paper gasket expand,??? thus adsorbing water??
just saying as I browse my statis threads............ overthought?? maybe so, either way rtv has its roll
then again...............other things do as well.... but some people live life with blinders on, and that fine with me, as I can still see them thru the weep holes
btw, you will never be sucka free, believe me..

...and a new phrase is born! I guess I could be a paper hanging old-timer then!
My '67 has cork valve cover gaskets and the water pump has paper. Seems to work ok. When I took of the diff covers, the front was RTV and the rear was paper. The rear did have a slight leak but the fluid level was still ok. We'll see how the Victor Reinz paper hangs together.
Got to go. Have to make my lunch - sandwich wrapped in waxpaper, put in paper bag with glass bottle of Coke. Or maybe I should use the lunch pail...
