"Are you sure the socket went in and did not just get hung up outside on the housing somewhere?"
That had also occurred to me. When the ratchet was hitting him in the face, he was understandably distracted.
Can you imagine pulling the tranny and have the socket fall out fall from the outside as you are lowering the tranny?

It's a dumb spot for the CPS so I can only assume that those are installed on the transmission housing before assembly into the Jeep. Why else would it be way up there??
We're all feeling your pain if that's any consolation. If it was me and I didn't get that out, I'd be always worrying about it. But maybe there's just enough clearance in there that the socket is happily lying on the bottom away from everything important.
Good luck.

I've done this before. I dropped a CPS bolt in the bell housing. It was not easy to recover cause of limited space. I got it out through the starter hole with a magnet but it took forever to get it.
Good luck.

I have this exact same problem. I dropped the socket while changing the cps... Followed by an open end. I got the wrench out, but the socket it behind the flywheel! Any ideas, short of dropping the tranny? I took off the dust plate, and can see the socket sometimes, but I cant seem to pull it past the flywheel. Help? This is the only thing keeping me from driving it.

If you can't ****** it with a magnet or magic claw
you probably have no choice but to scoot the transmission back & grab it.
Have you removed the starter & looked in there? You might be able to move the socket around with a blast of compressed air too.

nice! glad you got it out. my '94 had a couple cps bolts bouncing around in the bellhousing, i just left em in there. every once in a blue moon they would get scooped up by the flywheel and rattle like all hell for a few seconds, and then sit quietly till they got bored again
