some questions
whats the balist resister do?
a bad coil resister in the distributer tell the comp not to send spark to the coil pack but let it get power?
does the cps gasket do any thing?
theres a relay on my fender thats not on other xjs, it goes to my ignition wire that leads to the starter relay thing?could this be my alarm system?

A ballast resistor is used to provide power to the fuel pump. You can test it by jumpering past it and seeing if the fuel pump runs.
Im confused on the second question.....
IF there is a CPS gasket, no it really doesn't do much of anything. I have seen a few rubber covers on them, but not all that often.
The relay?? Don't know... where is it? whats it look like? Are you positive its on the wiring to the starter relay????

The ballast resistor Is an electrical resistor that is diverted into and out of the supply voltage to the ignition coil system...
This ballast resistor actually lowers voltage after the engine is started to reduce or minimize wear on ignition components...
It also helps the engine to fire much easier by effectively doubling the voltage provided to the ignition coil when the engine is being cranked...

1- Ballast resistor lowers voltage to the fuel pump so it will operate quieter after the engine starts.
2- CPS gasket keeps mud out of the pick-up area for the CPS and the flywheel/flexplate.
3- That relay is called the latch relay and it records the last settings of the TPS and IAC in preperation for the next startup cycle.

If it records anything it can't be a simple latch relay.. all a latch relay does is latch in the closed position requiring electrical flow to reopen it. Generally used for when you have a a pretty good load on a circuit and you don't want it cycling a bunch.

so
why don't all xjs have that relay? it has an orange wire thats cut and the rest leads to the black and whit wire that u can use to start ur vehicle from the engine bay
helpppppppp im so lost

That is just the way it was explained to me whowey. It may not be 100% accurate due to the amount of time that has elapsed since the explanation over ten years ago. I'm intimidated by the electrical stuff a little.

Wicked it stopped in 91 due to the new computers and the fact that the resistors job could now be done by the computer.
