This is the main reason why you should use the correct oil specified for the engine. The "ticking" (which should not be confused with a knock) is due to lack of oil volume and flow - either due to blocked passageways, or because the oil has a viscosity that is too high for the engine to properly circulate.

A more viscous oil also does not "help" the engine out if it's older or if it is knocking. The reason a thicker oil quiets knocking is because it doesn't transmit the SOUND of the knocking as much as a lighter weight oil does, and definitely does not make the problem go away - it could even make it worse.

Could be a exhaust leak, one small enough would sound like a deisel. Does it sound like valves? Hows the oil pressure? Does the sound go up with the rpms ? Ask questions before you figure you know it all, and say hey you used the wrong oil.
The man clearly states that he does the same on EVERY jeep in his family and this has never happened.
The sound sound dissapers around 1500 rpm. oil pressure is great never get below 40.i but a wooden dowel on the oil pan and it very clearly coming from the lower end. my first guess was bearing's, just figured id post and see if there could be another source to this noise!

I had the same thing happen to a 88 XJ that i used to own, with a mix of 5 quarts 15w-40 and 1 quart Lucas Petro Oil Stabilizer. I immediately drained those 6 quarts and refilled the sump with 10w-30, just like you guys say, and the noises went away. She had a little over 200,000 very hard and abused miles on her at the time, and the same motor is still going strong with over 250,000 miles on her now in my buddies possesion.

Within a month if the PO had put gear lube in it it would have blown up by now!!! I guarantee it. What brand and kind of oil and filter are you now running. I had the same issue running Q-horsepower and a K&N oil filter. switched to Mobil 1 and wicks filter and never looked back. And it was a lot cheaper then a new motor!!!!!!!!!!!

im running valvoline 10w40 with a bottle of lucas and a k&n filter

GET RID OF THAT FILTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought the same thing. They make good air filters I bet they make good oil filters. No my only guess as to why i had my issues is to the fact of Q-horsepower spent more on adds then on product. And a company that makes air filters has no right to make a oil filter unless they have a vary long record of success. Oil filters have a bypass valve that if not working can starve the top of the motor for oil and make a tick or even a knock. And if not corrected can cause serious issues. That's why I run wixx. They have been around a long time and know there stuff same with Mobil. There are other brands out there that are good. But for me if it hasn't been time tested and proven. I don't want it. That's why I drive and XJ!!!!

could the K&N filter possibly be restricting flow?? I was looking into getting a couple and now that i see that both of you guys used it and seem to of had this problem, im debating whether or not to get them now..

Everyone in my family swears by Napa gold filters. Only like 5 bucks and they are some of the best. We also use Carquest store brand oil, because all it is is debranded Valvoline. Great stuff, no additives or anything, except a can of seafoam a few hundred miles before a change to get all the sludge and crap out.

carquest oil is debranded valvoline AND the carquest filters are WIX i use them in everything i own from my xj to my 66 nova to my 10 sec. drag car

you would actually have a different opinion if you saw the inside of matt's old motor.

thing ran damn strong...but that was most definitely gear lube in it. crank, bearings, lifters, and cam are all shot.

mine sounds like a diesel, but it also has an aggressive cam... good luck finding your issue

Well, i found the problem. i guess it was just a coincidence it started after my oil change, but today i pulled the dust cover on the tranny and surenuff loose bolt's. so i tightend them the best i could ( i was running out of time and i was pissed) started her and no more diesel clunk.

I personally use royal purple 10w30, for the engine and royal purple trans fluid and gear oil for every thing else. When I got my 88 i paid 300 for it and it knocked like hell. I had a motor ready and figured i'd try the RP 10w30 for kicks. 293,000+ miles on the 88 with that motor that was knocking. NEVER use additives. it's like putting a bandaid on a broken leg. The 88 is still running strong closin in on 300,000.
