Source for 1990 Headligth switch connector
Hey all... just picked up a 1990 XJ 4.0 auto to add to my XJ family, but the headlight switch is fried, as is common. I was able to find the switch easily, but am having a lot of problems locating a new connector to replace the melted one.
My local junk yard does not have any Renix era Jeeps right now, and I have not had any luck at the local parts stores, Rock Auto, or any other of the large online parts retailers.
Before I throw in the towel and just use a bunch of female connectors, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck tracking down replacements. I've read a lot of threads where other people had the same issue, but haven't found one where it was resolved, so just thought I would ask again.
Thanks. I'll get some pics up of the new family member after it gets here. Should be delivered by tomorrow morning.

I've had problems with the headlight switch on my 94 XJ and used replacement parts from the following:
http://www.smpcorp.com/en/
Click on the Learn More link for their brands & eCatalogs. Then click Standard, then go to eCatalog. Put in your Jeep specs and search.
Once the parts page comes up filter it by choosing "Connector - Headlight".
The results will give you part numbers and pictures. That way you'll be able to tell if it will really fit or not.
You can't buy it from them directly but at least it should give you a part number to search the internet. It's what I did and I got what I needed through a retailer on Amazon!

Thanks. I've actually searched through there before I posted this, and all that they have available for the 1990 is the "headlight dimmer switch" connector, not the actual "headlight switch connector". At this point, I haven't had any luck finding one, new or used, so I am going to use the same connector that my 96 uses. It has two extra terminals that are keeping it from fitting on to the headlight switch, but with a rotary tool and little bit of luck, I believe I can modify it to fit.
The additional two wires, if my FSM is correct, are for components that were added to the later model XJ's, so I shouldn't miss them anyways.
I will be making a video about the modifications, but I am just waiting until I figure out the upgraded headlight harness. Haven't decided if I am buying one or if I want to make a video about how to make one from scratch... but when I fix the connector, I want to do the wiring harness at the same time, just so I'm not running the risk of frying the new connector... and I know how easily distracted I get by shiny objects.... if I don't do them at the same time, I will get involved in another project and never get around to it, until the new connector gets fried too.

Check Dorman part #85851 or Standard Motor S720(which looks identical to the picture posted above my post). If those are what your looking for. O'Reilly's also carries this which has the male parts, made by BWD.

I think, but I'm not sure, that this is a GM switch. AMC used lots of GM parts. ROCK AUTO has lots of parts listed for GM headlamps switches with the picture and applicable vehicles. Check out 1985 or so Chev C10 or similar truck or even cars of the 70s to 80s era. Or go to their site and search just STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS, HEADLAMP SWITCH which will show lots of products from Standard.

That's the one I have. Its got 9 terminals, where the one for my 1990 XJ only has 7. 7 of the 9 match up, but the extra 2 are keeping it from seating on the switch correctly, so I'm going to have to modify it, by removing the area of the plug where the extra 2 wires are.....
Or, I guess I could buy the switch that fits this one, and just leave those two wires unconnected. I think either way will work, but I already have the switch for the 1990 (The new one came with the Jeep so I have no way of returning or exchanging it).

Yes, Sir. Ordered from Rock Auto

Even in the picture, you can see it has 9 wires instead of 7.

AMC didn't necessarily use actual GM parts. They often bought from the same suppliers that supplied parts to GM and Ford, as well as others.
Since they didn't have a whole lot of money, they figured why reinvent the wheel so to speak.
