Well that puts that to bed. Isn't RC12ECC the OE spec for 1998, though? Why would NGK and Champion build differently?

The RC12ECC is specified all the way up to 2001. By the looks of it, the RC12ECC and the NGK ZFR5N look the same. The NGK FR5-1 specified as their plug for the '98 (0630 head).

I just emailed NGK again with my photo and asked them what the purpose of the unthreaded extension on the FR5-1 is for.

Indeed! I wonder if it affects the heat range slightly. Might be worthwhile to run in cyls 3 & 4 with a 0331

Below is the reply to my email asking about the extension on the FR5-1 plug. As far as I'm concerned, school's still out on this. I think I'll stick with my ZFR5N plugs.

Hello,

This is referred to as an extended shell reach, Chrysler is one of the only OEM companies to use this as it is meant to protect the firing electrode from spark blow out.

I still don't understand why Champion didn't do that if they were the factory plug. Very bizarre

Sorry to necro post, but I tried searching and came up empty

Do I want the FR5-1 or the ZFR5N for my 98 XJ 4.0? Rock auto is pulling up the FR5-1 and other parts stores are pulling up the ZFR5N

Is the only difference the amount of threads protecting the ceramic? Rock Auto is saying that the gap on the FR5-1 is .04 vs. .036 for the ZFR5N but I always check gap anyways

The price is identical or I would have gone with the cheaper option already, lol

Damn, lightning fast response at 1 AM. Thanks as always Cruiser

The ZFR5N is cheap enough for me to get locally ($2.50 vs $4.29) so that's a bonus

Switching from the Champions because the NGK's seem to be better quality overall (japan vs china made)

I honestly have no idea, that was according to the internets and a few forum postings I found while half asleep.

NGK does seem to be higher quality though, made in Japan according to the box

Champion Coppers from advance auto. Make sure to use a discount code, just google it then use store pickup. Cheaper than amazon or ebay usually.
