Speed Sensor Replaced, Check Engine Still On
Hey Guys, I got a P0715 code on my 2000 XJ and i replaced the speed sensor on the transfer case. I disconnected the battery for awhile and the check engine light stayed off for a day and a half. Well it came back on today and i had the code read and it shows P0715 again. The guy at advanced auto advised that the vehicle needs to be driven about a 100 miles before it will reset. Does this sound correct because I cant much out there about this tactic? Secondly, do I have a second sensor on the transmission like the I6 GC's?

Thanks for the detailed photo Ken! That brings up a third question. Will the transmission speed sensor bring up a P0715 code?

Well , Apparently they are hard to find! There are tons of transmission input sensors for the grand Cherokee's but none for the Cherokee? I find that strange that the GC I6's have plenty of input sensors but the cherokee I6's have none.

P0715 is an Input Speed Sensor fault.
Here's some data on it.
P0715-INPUT SPEED SENSOR ERROR
When Monitored: Continuously while in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears with an Output Speed
Sensor signal present and vehicle speed is over 8 MPH.
Set Condition: No signal from the Input Speed Sensor (ISS) with an Output Speed Sensor
signal present. The DTC will be set when the TCM verifies that there is no ISS for 1 second
in 2nd gear.
Possible Causes:
POSSIBLE CAUSES
INTERMITTENT WIRING AND/OR CONNECTORS
INPUT SPEED SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN
INPUT SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
INPUT SPEED SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
INPUT SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
ISS SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO ISS GROUND CIRCUIT
INPUT SPEED SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
INPUT SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
INPUT SPEED SENSOR - OUT OF RANGE
TCM-INPUT SPEED SENSOR
Here's what the Transmission Speed Sensor looks like. The parts catalog calls it a Vehicle Speed Sensor for some reason. OEM part number 4897734AA.
Before changing it check the wiring going to it and check the connector pins and pin cavities for corrosion. You can read between the two pins on the sensor using an Ohmmeter. You should read a resistance value. Reading continuity or an open indicates the sensor is bad. There's a magnet in the tip of the sensor that you can see if it's any good by removing the sensor and checking it.
I'm not sure that you can get the sensor anywhere except the dealer, but you can check Rockauto .com and see if they have them.
Big bucks for these things.

Yall have been very helpful!!! I put in the part number and alot of information popped up including Kens post helping someone on the same exact thing. Ken, is there a way to connect that information with the typical internet search on this subject , some how linking them with the " transmission input and output speed sensors" info which was obviously searched by everyone in need of the " vehicle Speed sensor". I'm sure it is almost always mistaken for the speed sensor on the transfer case,,Guilty Here! Thanks again guys for sharing your knowledge and patients on our beloved XJ's.

Not looking forward to the " Output Speed Sensor" eventually going out! Looks like a ***** to get too! Thanks for yalls help...
