what you guys are telling me is that the transfer case is not the original one. that apparently it was replaced with an older model along the way.
now is making sense why the speed sensor was not connected. i'm still gonna get under it in order to find the wires and see if they are in good shape.
will an older speed sensor plug to the wire harness of my year?

Thats a very early case, 80s era.. Don't know when they stopped using the vaccum disconnect front axle but I know it was just the first couple years of production.
Your probably going to have to find a late model TC or tailconle to fix.. I beleave you could do it by doing a SYE upgrade.

You need this assembly off of a xj your year. If yours is automatic get one from a automatic same if yours is 5 speed. Must also be same engine size so the attached gear will be calibrated for correct mph . If you have over size tires a different gear most be used for proper calibration......

mine has 31" tires. what would be the gear?

Depends on axle gearing...seems like a 32 there pretty inexpensive on ebay just note theres long and short styles......http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoSpeedoGears.htm
