Speedo snafu 91 cherokee
I bought this jeep a few months ago, hasn't had speedo/odometer functionality since I bought it. I've finally gotten tired of using my phone's gps speedo so I decided to get it taken care of. Immediately upon inspection I noticed that the connector was just dangling near the clip, then realized that they don't match, the female plug coming from the harness is 2 prong where as the speed sensor has 3. I did some googling and it looks like 3 pins is correct. My question is, are there other, perhaps older, speedo applications that only use 2 pins? I'd prefer to not have to buy a new harness since money is kind of tight so any insights would be appreciated!

From what I can tell the 2-pin is correct for your vehicle.

Thank you, this thing is pretty frankensteined so I guess I can't say I'm surprised that someone stuffed the wrong speed sensor into it haha. While trying to trace the harness back to the dash to make sure it was all intact I managed to eradicate about 50 ft of old alarm and sub wires. Score!
I guess it's time to pick up a new sensor

I bought a new speedo sensor from summitracing.com and it came with the matching harness. Cut and splice that new one in there with the new sensor and you'd be good to go. If you wanted to go the *new* route.

I was trying to find a pinout schematic but not having much luck, any ideas on how I would splice the 2pin to a 3? Or are you saying just re rout the whole harness?

bump! any help would be appreciated, haven't had time to go to a salvage yard to look for a harness yet, anyone know if it's possible to run an adapter to connect the older 2 pin clip (91) to the newer 3 pin sensor clip (93) ?

I did find the following info at Allpar- use at your own risk. They appear to be talking about Chrysler-built trannys, not the AW4, whether or not this will work, I don't know. Personally I'd just get the right sensor. But here goes anyway:
You can make it work with some minor wiring changes. Basically what you do is cut off the plug from the wiring harness of the 1993 or later vehicle (4 speed trannies excluded beginning 1994), trying to get as much wire from the harness as possible. The 3 wire speed sensor fits right in the hole and physically attaches the same way. Then you have to cut the wire plug off your car and splice 2 wires of the three wire plug into your wiring harness. Match up the colors. This will leave a 3rd wire which will probably be an Orange with white stripe. The third wire has to go to a 5 or 8 volt supply and the easiest thing to do is find the solid 5 volts going to the throttle position sensor and tap the wire into that source. Then everything should work like a 2 wire sensor but the 3 wire unit will be more reliable since it doesn't have the internal reed switches of a 2 wire unit.

They aren't directly interchangeable.
