Default speedometer does not work??

I got this jeep with the speedo not working. I just took the speedo gear out of the T-case and looked to make sure its not stripped or chunks taken out, looks perfect. I realigned it when i put it back in but my speedo still doesnt work.

im stumped since its a electronic speedo and not a cable, What the hell was wrong with cables?

1992 Cherokee Limited
4.0 HO
AW4
Np242
Has ABS (that doesn't work 'check ABS' light is on in dash)

any ideas??

if it reads zero, pull out your cluster and look for any burnt contacts or raw wires in the harness for the cluster as well.

you will need a T-20(or maybe 15) torx driver, just having the bit will not work. The whole to unscrew the cover on the steering wheel is to small. then you need to take the bezel off of the dash(4 screws) then just start removing whats in the way of removing the gauges

thats the first thing i did (figuring it would have a cable that was missing or kinked) I didnt see anything unusual but ill look again tomorrow

anything else that seems to be a common problem? (ive searched and found nothing that i havent tried already)

there is a speed sensor bolted to the housing that you pulled out of your transfer case. I would start there they sell them everywhere. Its has a single bolt and removes out of the part you already took off.

I just went through this on my 91, and found that the square key (on the input of the speed sensor) that fits into the driven gear was "rounded", not allowing it to turn when the gear turned. Not sure what may have caused that, but I'm finding that mine was built from some 90 pieces and may have been swapped bad. I had a friend who had an old one from his Dodge truck, that I substituted and now have speedo. The pulsing signal they put out is somewhat standardized on OE (aftermarket is generally more pilses per mile) so a salvage piece may very well be a good alternative. The NAPA part for mine was @$38.00, still not too bad. Russ

yeah i took that sensor off, it looked square still.

Any way to test it to make sure its bad or good? (on a bit of a very tight budget and i havent had time to hit up the JY)

From what I understand, you should be able to spin it ( in a drill) and measure a pulsating voltage. The problem is the 8 pulses per mile ( I think that is what it is) is hard to spot on all but a graphing meter ( the better Flukes allow this), but any signal at all should at least make your volt meter register some alternating signal. I tried it with mine and did see a alternating signal - very low voltage, a digital meter would definitely be needed.
Also, as with any of these sensors, check condition of connector terminals. Any corrosion would surely block these low voltage signals. Russ

you can score a junk yard one. Cash for clunkers has flooded my local junkyard. For me its kinda pathetic I'm out there takin parts off a junker cherokee that's better than mine.

Sorry to hijack this post. However, I am having the same issue, but I just put a transmission from a '98 into a '92. The plugs were slightly different onthe sensor, but matched up. Is the plug from the '98 transfer case not compatible with the harness from the '92? or is the sensor just bad?
