speedometer sticking at 0
I have a 93 xj with a 4.0. my speedometer keeps sticking at 0mph. If you tap the plastic infront of it it will pick up and work till I stop and it does it again. Sometime at about 45mph it jump to 60-65 mph and I have to tap it again. also every once in a while it will go all the way around to 0 (behind the little plastic pin it rests on when your stoped) and gets stuck and I have to take it apart to get it back over the little pin. Any tips would be great. Thanks

Hmm, this is an odd one. I would say to pop out the cluster and make sure the connector is plugged in real good. That should take about 15 minutes to do, so I'd say it's worth a shot. Could also be the vehicle speed sensor acting up which is located somewhere at the front of the vehicle.

I did that already and made sure everything is all connected nice and tight. It's got me stumped. I can rebuild transfer cases but the spedo has me seriously confusedlol

Hook up a GPS and use the speed indicator on it for now until you get this figured out, if your worried about speeding tickets. I'd replace the speed sensor, it's only like $25. I just don't know the exact location, as I've never changed one on a Jeep.

Alright, after looking it up I believe it's on the transfer case. Looks like drivers side underneath http://z.about.com/d/autorepair/1/0/l/W/78294514.gif .

same thing before
i had the same problem on my 1989 XJ, and i took out the cluster and found the speedometer cable broke half way down. It would spin when i touched it as well, and then sometimes peek, and do crazy stuff, if the cable pulls out when the cluster is off, that is you prob, its worth trying, and a cheap fix as well, one from the ljy is only 5 bucks. Good luck

Nope, from 91 up, it's all in one wiring harness. All the gauges including speedo, tach, water temp, oil pressure, battery voltage, and gas gauge are powered by one harness. The speed is monitored by the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which I believe is located on the transfer case.

That's correct. There are 2 plugs, the one in the back for all the gauges, then the driver's side there is another connector for all the warning lights (Check Engine, GEN, Parking Brake, etc.)
