i know on my 87XJ my speedometer doesnt work.
I followed the cable down from the cluster, just behind the steering column by the brake/gas pedals, there is a junction.

Cable from speedometer ---> Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) ----> cable to transmission

heres a pic of mine (VSS left, cable to cluster right), and these are different as the years go up.

Im going to just replace the speedometer cable from the cluster to this, and find this at a junkyard. But i know for a FACT this is my speedometer problem, i rigged it temporarily and it worked, but was flakey. I finally broke it completely trying to move it around (previous owner cracked the plastic threading on the VSS).

The problem, no auto store or dealership knows what this is nor do they carry it that I have found. So its a pure 'junk yard' pull part. Even Chiltons/Haynes manuals dont reference this part. I searched page for page.
