Default sporadic hesitation, no engine codes

I just bought a 1999 4.0 with 138,000 on it. My problem started with a fluctuating idle. Then it started to hesitate while driving. When this happens if i gave it a lot of gas it seems to clear out also if i put it in neutral it revs fine. I took it to a mechanic and he checked all the sensors and gave it a tuneup. still happening. The exhaust system is all original. I have used the search button and have not come up with anything solid. I am leaning toward bad cat, bad temp sensor or fuel system related. please help because i hate to just replace parts.

If your check engine light is not on double check that it works when you turn the key over to start it. If it does then you don't need to replace the cat. I would replace the fuel filter just to do it and have a good clean filter in there in case it has never been replaced; it does happen from time to time. My guess would be your distributor as I ran into this problem when I took mine through the mud, it would chug down the road but run fine when in park, neutral, or at a full stop. When I would put the pedal to the floor it would take a second but then run fine, minus the couple of back fires from the excess gas in the cylinder. Replace or pull that apart and make sure there is no moister in there and reseal it. Double check to make sure your wires are making good contact and that should fix the problem.

It had a full tune up a week ago but I guess I should double check everything. Seeing as how the fuel filter is in the tank I wonder if it is worth changing the entire pump assembly while i am in there.

The check engine light works and it finally threw a code P0132. It stalled on me three time when i was stopping today. I replaced the tps and nothing has changed. The distributor is brand new and i have not really gotten a chance to go off road yet. any other ideas? this is driving me nuts because I have not even put 150 miles on the jeep yet.

I had a similar problem on mine, it ended up being the #1 02 sensor, mine took like over a month to throw a code, and correct me if I'm wrong but, I believe that P0132 is an 02 sensor code

Thanks for the codes syncview but i already knew what P0132 was. I am going to replace the #1 sensor tomorrow. I was trying to see if anyone else had the same issue. The problem happens so often and it has only tripped a code once. Plotski999 you say yours would run shi**y and no code? I have my fingers crossed that it's the o2.

Yea it would run like crap for a few minutes then perfect for an hour, maybe more maybe less, then it would do it again for a few minutes. changed that #1 02 sensor and haven't seen the problem since

Better check the O2 sensor fuses first.. I don't know their exact location someone please explain..

02 fuse: on my 97 there is a 02 overload (or something like that) in the power distribution center under the hood. i belive it keeps any excessive voltage comming out from the 02 from frying the ECU. (somebody correct me if im wrong, please). Its one of those mini fuses, 15A, i think. It should tell you what one it is in the owners maunal.

I swapped out the tps and that did nothing... put in an o2 sensor and BAM runs like a top!!! thanks guys. the tps is now for sale it was in the jeep for about 20 mins. pm me

Howdy,

I know this thread is a tad old, but in case others are looking for the answer I will relate my recent experience...

I own a 1999 Cherokee that had the exact same problem. I went nuts for a couple months, no codes, etc., until someone told me it was probably the heater circuit in the #1 O2 sensor. He had me test it by disconnecting the sensor and running it.

Aside from the check engine light on due to no sensor, there was no hesitation or stalling. So I changed the sensor as the OP did and end of problem!
