squeaking & squeaking under my hood~ HELP!
I own a 96 jeep Cherokee 4 wd 4.0 L-6 my rig has a constant low
chirping squeak until it warms for apx. 5-8 min. it then stops, until
I put it in gear. R or D. then it turns into a LOUD SCREACH! even worse
while turning the wheel and so much worse with acceleration, for another
10-12 min. sometimes it starts when turning on the heater and other
times will stop when I turn it off. not always though. if it isn't squeaking, sometimes it squeaks when turning a corner. After driving it awhile,
it stops squeaking completely ALWAYS ! last week I bought a new serpentine belt, after which, AutoZone checked the alternator and battery for me as the
squeaking pulls on my battery gauge. alternator showed good, battery
bad. bought new battery. squeaking worse than ever, SO LOUD! I
accidentally left the cap off my radiator while filling my fluids not to
long ago. So I'm wondering if my new belt has become contaminated.
I'm cleaning it and all pulleys tomorrow. I've replaced the idler pulley a
couple of summers ago. I've tightened, loosened, and 're- tightened
the tension, but hasn't helped. any ideas anyone? Thanks for much
needed advice from any who replies with much appreciation.
I've visited this site for about a year now. I've received lots of help.
but this one has got me, so I'm posting for the first time. hope I've
posted in the tho
right place :-) thanks to all!

While the belt is off check each pulley, spinning it by hand. See if one feels gritty, or loose. Clean them with brake cleaner or something similar and install a new belt. It has to be TIGHT!

squeaking and squealing under my hood~ HELP!
thank you Radi, I've got carburator cleaner, a brush and
some steel wool for the cleaning of belt and pulleys. found
site peaking my interest toward a possible, clutch fan
problem. the only thing is, my car doesn't overheat, unless of
course I don't put the radiator cap back on. was told the belt
should be able to turn 1/4 " after tightening. it does. make sense
to you? Thanks for replying, gives me hope that I may find the
answer here. :-)

thank you one wheel wonder
I think you are right on. I couldn't budge the idler pulley
bolt to loosen the belt, so I loosened only the tensioner
and managed to get it off that way. upon inspection of
pulleys, I found a crack across the power steering pulley.
replacing that should take care of that really loud screach. I'm
still going to clean belt and other pulleys with carb cleaner
though. certainly can't hurt as long as I don't use the carb
cleaner to often right?
I also removed the cooling fan, spun the blades, only to hear
it squeaking. replacing the clutch should take care of that first low
pitched squeak I hear when when first starting it. today I'm
hopeful rather than exasperated :-) I do wish it wasn't raining
though. makes for a cold wet job. :-( wishing you and radi
a happy day. thank you both :-)
