Default Squealing Rockers

So the other day my jeep began to over heat, got up to just under the red section on the temp gauge (270ish??) before I noticed. Pulled over and let it cool, refilled with water and was on my way. Ever since then I have this squealing noise coming from the top of my head, pretty sure it's a rocker and lifter making the noise.

How would I remedy this problem?
Can I remove the valve cover and turn the jeep on to see if I can notice which one is making the noise or will oil go shooting everywhere?
Does a rocker/lifter need to be replaced? If so do I need to remove the head or can this be done while it's still on the jeep?

Any and all help is appreciated. I've never worked on something like this but I'm not afraid to get in there and get dirty. It's a daily driver and my only car so want to get this fixed asap before it becomes more of an issue than what it currently is. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yep. A cheap mechanic's stethoscope will be a huge help.

Yep. It will be like Old Faithful - a geyser shooting oil all over your garage.

Not really.

Thanks, seems so long as I don't rev it up I should be able to start it with it off. I know it's a rocker, topped the oil in it yesterday morning and the noise stopped then started coming back slowly.

That mechanic's stethoscope will tell the story. Everybody should have one, and use it. It's amazing what you can hear. Get one and just play with it - listen to various places all over your engine. Water pump, alternator, anything you can get to. You'll learn a lot.

But there's something else you might want to try as well. Based on what you just said, once you have the cover off, just take some oil to each rocker one at a time, and see when the noise goes away.

The next question is, why? Is an oil passage plugged?

I'm guessing from it over heating some junk broke loss and clogged something. Waiting for my next day off and going to pop the cover off and have a look. Also thinking of tossing in some of that Lucas oil cleaning stuff in it to see if that helps any.

Out of coolant due to freeze plug leak, so have been babying it along until I have time to tear it apart to replace. And it wasn't out of oil was topping it off.

Forget the Lucas. If you have a plugged oil passage, a cleaner isn't going to get the job done soon enough to prevent serious damage.
