Well this is the oem alternator for the 01 cherokee....
http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/...ek+Google+Base
The back of mine looks like that, which I know is different from most xjs, my guess is that they changed it at the last year (that back looks like the GCs from 01)
I'm not worried about the direction as much as how it has to sit within the nuts and washer, and how far into the boot the perpindicular tab on the wire should be.
Thanks for the pic about the idler pulley. On mine, the bolt looks tough to get to behind that fan...any tips?

I'm not sure how to get to that bolt. Mine is a completely different setup.

Well thanks for all the info! I'm gonna leave the alternator how it is, with the wire just outside the inner bolt, and try and get the belt on and running.
I will update tomorrow....cause I may be killed by the gf if I work on the jeep tonight

today is the day!
i went to the pick n pull this morning because they had a 00 cherokee just in....pulled off a new driver side fender and a washer fluid bottle, just as a bonus.
i also picked up the haynes manual.
on to the serpentine belt....
the haynes manual routing diagram shows the idler pulley on the passenger side just to the right of the AC unit.
the diagram on this thread in page 2 shows it underneath the PS pump, which is where mine is.
im just a little concerned about which way to do it....if i read the diagrams right the only thing it does is reverse the direction of the water pump.
need help quick please!

don't believe haynes. It's a generic guide, and is not always up to par.
running the water pump in the wrong direction would be catastrophic.

so i got the belt on, battery back in, and go to turn the key.
there is a dinging noise and the gas gauge goes from empty to full and back. I figured that hte battery was just dead.
grab my jumper cables, connect it up to my truck, leave the truck running for a few minutes while i stand in the back and smoke.
when i notice a burning smell....i run to the front of the vehicles, my cables are melting and all four clamps are smoking.
i cant believe im gonna say this......but i crossed the terminals when jumping....because i didnt double check the ones on the jeep.
bad news? very bad news? catastrophic news? or only slightly bad news?
p.s. i fixed the connections with my backup jumper cables, and when i put the key in the ignition (while the battery was connected) there was no noise, no sound, nothing.

check to see if the battery ground is still intact running to the fender.
also check with the other battery, and check all of your fuses. Swap out relays also.
worst case you may have fried your PCM bud...

today im gonna check all the fuses (how do you check the big square black ones?), make sure the ground is still running to the fender, check out the fusible link (does the 2001 XJ have one?), and buy a new battery.
if none of that works, what it my next move, and how do i figure out what is broken?
im really hopefully i didnt fry everything.....but if i did, i might abandon this jeep and upgrade to this:
