Default Start run lights problem

I have a 1988 cherokee 4.0 and with the Parke light fuse in and lights on the engine wont run. Turn the lights off runs fine. Soooooo I'm lost from here. Oh and it won't start with the key the owner before me pit a push button on it. I replaced ign switch and key switch all wires are hooked up but still nothing ..... relay? Fuse? Other? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Headlamp switch and connector? The melted, red-faced connector is the original one in my '99 - the black one is the replacement. This is what can happen over time when a good contact goes bad. It can lead to other seemingly unrelated problems. While this may not be the absolute cause for your issue, it is a possibility worth inspecting. While inspecting for that you may find more of what the PO did and how they did it.
