Default Starter engages when battery is connected after replacing

Hey everyone, new to the forum!
So I have a 2000 XJ 4.0 all stock. Starter was acting up, bought a new one and replaced. After replacement when connecting neg battery the starter engaged with no key in ignition. No wires touching on the Solonoid. Thinking bad starter or bad solonoid, I put the old starter in unil I could get a replacement. After hooking up the old starter... same problem. What did I screw up or what could be causing me to get power to the starter without flipping the ignition? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you unplug the small wire from the starter does it do the same thing?

Note from DJ
Before removing the small wire connector; look and see that no part of the small wire connector or its wire is touching the large positive connector.

Yea, your solenoid is shorting to something, look for bare wires or it could be the solenoid itself they can and do tend to short inside.

Fair enough. I’ll check the wires again prior to trying with exciter wire disconnected. It’s just blowing my mind that it’s happening to two starters and the old didn’t have the problem until after replacing. This is probably a dumb question but any chance of computer memory causing issued?

Thanks DJ, I’ll double check that first

UPDATE: So I checked to make sure wires were not touching and they were not. Disconnected small exciter wire, same issue. Sounds like solonoid but the old starter didn’t have this problem before and now after switching back it does... any ideas?

Well if it does it with the small wire disconnected the problem is in the starter or your connections not on the jeep.

You should have your big wire connected to the connection that both the orange and blue arrows are touching. Is it possible you connected it to the other side instead by mistake?
