Stearing box adjustment
I need to adjust my SB, my crappy haynes manual does not cover this. Has any one done this or know how?

Check all of the other steering components first before you go adjusting the steering box. Too much adjustment to the box will wear out the sector shaft faster and cause weird steering issues.

and if you do decide to do it mark where it was when you started with a sharpie and test it out after every little turn and you know its too tight when the wheel will not return to zero after a turn when you let go

I will have to say after the Md state inspection , I would think that all of the stearing parts checked out OK. My XJ has wider tires then stock on it, that may be why it wonders a bit . My 81 M635 BMW has wider tires too and wonders some allso. This XJ is my 1st 4X4 so I have some things to learn.

my dad used to have a 79 635csi with all the m options but hte actual engine. that is one badass car you have.
none of my bmws ever wandered with wider tires. i have wider tires on my 91 318 right now and its fine. i would imagine though, all that is happening is since the tires are wider the grooves in the road pull you more, like a motorcycle on a grooved road so its not wandering in reality. if you are constantly making little steering changes, even on flat smooth roads, then the alignment is not right. probably the toe is right but something else is off. on the bmw, when they aligned it did they use some ballast to make up for hte weight of you driving it? that is how to properly align a bmw.

SUPERJ. both the XJ and M635 steer strait on smooth roads . I think it is the crappy Baltimore roads. The BMW is a very fun car to drive.
