The alloy used with rims is completely different then the aluminum used to make cans..I can see the analogy but it's still not a very good one. The way alloy rims are made now days they are pretty darn tough.
My reasoning for using steel when offroading has really nothing to do with breaking but more for I don't want to spend $600+ on nice rims just to get rock rash or what ever. With steel rims if they get scratched up who cares up buy a new one or paint it. I have seen guys scratch the living hell out of their nice alloy rims and be very pissed off and I don't want to ever go down that road.

If you had an aluminum can made from the same gauge as the regular "tin" cans are I doubt you'd want to try and crush that against your forehead. JMO

It's all about what design wheel you like and what you have to spend. If you got the $$ and like a design, then go for the alloy's. If you want a cheap set that'll look good but you won't cry over if you mess one up, get steel. Both can take a fair amount of abuse, and both can fail with too much abuse. For me, the cheaper steel rims work. I love me a good debate

IMHO, if you want the best of both worlds, get a set of FORGED aluminum rims. Just be prepaired to pay for them. If I am correct, I remember reading where you can hammer them just like steel rims if they get bent. Check out the test that 4 wheel and off-road did.
