Just get senders from gauge cluster donor vechicle ....that way you can match up or if you feel lucky swap them in after 95 the temp gauge works thru cts on thermo housing.

The harness is pre-wired for the tach.
Here is the process...
1. remove old idiot light cluster
2. plug same harness into new gauge cluster
3. Replace coolant temp switch (for light) with coolant temp sender (for gauge)
4. Replace oil pressure switch (for light) with oil pressure sender (for gauge)
Done. Seriously. That's all there is to it.

wow... they seriously made that easy. Trip to the junkyard it is on Saturday. I have an 95, what range of jeeps should I be checking for? just 91-96? is there any changes in different years outside of that?
thanks for the quick replies

I've seen them for sale on eBay for $45 or so.
I picked up one form a local yard for $25. There were many more.
If you can't find one locally, I could pull one for you and ship it if you cover the costs. PM me if you're interested.

So I did make it to the junkyard on Saturday and picked up a cluster from a 94 XJ with only 95k on the odometer (mine has 176, with about 90 on the engine swap, so it about evens it) along with a new tail light and a roof rack sliders for $40.
Took about 30 mins to take the dash apart and it was super easy to change it out, plug and play. Went to pepboys and got the 2 sensors for coolant and oil and its all done.
Side note, for those looking for the oil press sensor on a 2.5 with AC.... it's right under the A/C and you better be double jointed and a contorshonist to get your arm with a wrench in there.
Now to order some LEDS, it is a dim cluster for sure.

Awesome! Remember, if you change out the flash indicator bulbs (green arrows in the cluster) to LEDs you may have to swap your flash relay from the load trigger-type to an electronic flasher due to the reduced load placed on the circuit by the LEDs. The symptoms are that your flashers don't flash, they come on solid.

I also reset my odometer to match my old one, California is plagued with regulations regarding odometer swaps... and when you can burn wood in your fireplace, and when you can water your grass and .... ... ... .... .... ... ...... .... ...

That looks really bright and super clean compared to my faded white one. Now I'm just not sure if I want to do the white like yours or go orange . choicessss

Great thread, thanks!!
I swapped for the full gauge cluster in my '87, replaced the senders for oil and water temp, from Autozone (before I read this).
Everything works BUT the water temp gauge, the needle does not move at all. When I bought the sender from Autozone, they were aware of the difference between the sender and switch, and supposedly sold me the right one.
What is the best way of troubleshooting to find out if the JY gauge just doesn't work, or if the problem is the sender?
thanks!

I would just get another one from autozone... There sender seem to be not any good it's a free replacement look up online for the gauge sender and look up the part number on the box they may have given you the wrong one...

The part number checks out, guess I will swap it out... if I can find the receipt!
Are there any tricks with putting the gauge in hot water and using a multimeter? Heard about that a while ago, but forget the specifics.

I recently swapped my '95's instrument cluster for gauges. It was almost as simple as plug-and-play.
Get a cluster with gauges from a '91 - '96 model. Take the dash apart and swap them out. Go to Napa and buy a new oil pressure switch and a temperature switch - don't get the Autozone Duralast model temp switch. Swap the two switches on the engine and you're done.
After taking apart my dash so many times in the last several weeks. I could probably make the conversion in fifteen minutes or so by now. A little longer if I wanted to make the new odometer match.

Same here,,, took about a half hour tops to swap the cluster. And another half hour to swap the needed sensors, Temp and oil pressure.
Works like a charm.
There are MANY how-to's here on this.
