I did the Alt upgrade when the old one gave it up, but I haven't got the high pitch chirping (crickets) out of the engine bay. I bought the NAPA Krikit II and did the adj. per instructions, even went tighter and looser to see if I could eliminate the stooooopid sound. Before the new alt it just squeaked now it is less but it drives me BATTY. (OBTW I am legally 90% deaf, even flunked the hearing test on my draft day back in '71) I know if you drive fast enough in an xj the other noises rule. It is a '90 xj limited w/4.0 and 4x4. I checked the the other pulleys when I changed the alt. what did I miss

 

One of your pulleys has bearings about to go. Might not make noise until you put tension on it with the belt. Listening with a stethoscope should isolate it.

 

My distributor chirps.... I thought it was a belt at first. I gotta replace the whole dizzy I think cause there is a brass bushing that isn't really serviceable.
