WOW: many moons ago I had a landrover with an over stress protection for the drive shaft it was not standard it was added by the previous owner it had a dual purpose 1: it acted like a diff lock between front and rear diff and second if a wheel got stuck in a rut instead of breaking axles it jumped out as a safety. first time it happened I thought I killed the piece of cr.p. luckily my Dad knew the system which use to be standard on a certain model bedford truck.

I have never seen it before and never since but it looked just like that it even had PTO on the ****. question is is it the same thing?

would be interesting to know

power take-off maybe.

like what they use on tractors and big trucks.

use: powering external devices and machinery.

i'm pretty curious what theyd use that on an XJ for. maybe a winch

Wow... that's a four bolt single gear Power Take Off on what seems to be a NP 207 transfer case... The transmission aperture has been closed with a plate and the shifter probably is just to disengage power to the rear drive shaft, or maybe if it's a two gear to invert shaft rotation.
Interesting is also the drive shaft with the slip yoke on the shaft, i wonder if this is an aftermarket mod or if it is from the factory.
What does it do when you shift it?

Working in a salvage yard, I have seen one of those before, it was on a early cherokee chief, with a tow bar on the front, although the plate on the side is for PTO I believe the real purpose behind it, is to disengage the drive shaft while towing.

and no one really addressed the OPs question on "What is a pto?"
PTO= Power Take Off, its a gear driven output for accessories like a hydraulic pump used in plows and dump beds, or winches...

It's probably a front drive conversion for a plow. You keep the tc in 4wd low and when you reach a dry spot on the pavement you disengage the rear shaft and drive in 2wd (front) low range.

The shifter is prolly stuck in the PTO, I would take it apart and have a look inside.
Here is a good pdf file about PTOs:

WAIT! i got it! it's a reversible PTO! when you plow you need to go back and forth many times, so to keep the tranny always in Drive and don't stress it you reverse with the ****.
