STUCK IN 4 LOW!!
ok not to sure what happened but i was driving today and it sounded like my drive shaft fell off and was dragging so i pulled over checked and everythign was in tack so i started to take off and it sounded like metal getting grinded together loudly. i drove around a parking lot and it seemed to get louder. i shifted into 4 high and it was even worse and then it wouldnt go back into 2 wheel lik e it was jammed in 4 then i tried to take off in 4 high and it was like it was in nuetral but a bad grinding sound then i shifted into 4 low and it still sounded horrible but not as bad and now it wont go out of 4 low at all its like totally jammed.
luckily i was close to home so cruised 4 low at 15 mph for about two blocks
not it wont get out of 4 low but i have all my gears 1st 2nd.. and reverse but it wont go into 2 wheel and it sounds like horribly bad
is my t cases totally screwed?
what do i need to do?
also does it matter if its a t case from an auto or standard do they both work??

it sounds like it is screwed up for sure,as far as the xfercase goes, stick with one from an auto and 92 and above as they are 23 spline input shafts like yours and have the vss instead of cable for spped indication

so a standard and auto have the same t case?
mine is a 95 5speed and its the 231 t case
does that make a difference?
and is it going to ruin my tranny or cause any other damage that i drove it home after hearing the noises?
also whats the best way to start to take this baby apart as this is my first time doing this

They ar the same, the auto is alot more common. Your trany should be good,
As far as removing it,disconnect driveshafts,be careful with the caps on the u-joints so you do not loose the needle bearings, wrap them with tape after you remove them.
Then remove all the electrical connectors and linkage.
Then use a trany jack if you have one and support the transfer case and loosen the cross member and lower the back down a little this will make it easier to get to all the nuts that hold the trany to the xfercase. Before you remove the xfercase make sure you support the trany, you may need to put the trany in neutral so you can turn the trany to get it to come loose from the xfercase. Just take your time and look at it close,it is pretty easy to remove.
Make sure you drain it first, gets a little messy.

what years t cases will work?
and does it matter if its still the 231 that i have now or is it hard to put in the 242 or another t case?
also if i take the t case apart and everything looks good how do i know if i just need the chain or if its something other then the t case
does it have to be from a cherokee or will any jeep t case fit?
like off a grand or a tj??
