I didn't get started until I was 16 and my '02 Mustang demanded it. Haven't turned back, and I really get antsy if I don't have a project in the works.

I've heard it all now DO NOT use the proper tool for the job use a "SCREWDRIVER", do you use side cutters instead of a socket or wrench on nuts/bolts? This is a very messy way to do it also with oil everywhere (I did it once when I was young and dumb) then went and bought a filter tool.
The style filter wrench the OP has is fine and should work OK it does on mine. For really tough ones I have a chain type filter wrench looks like a bicycle chain that I have owned for over 30 yrs. I think I have at least one of every type mentioned that I have bought over the yrs. since 1963 a drawer full.
Like already said always lube the rubber filter gasket with oil on your finger tip and ONLY hand tighten. Do drain the oil when hot because small particles will be suspended in the oil and will drain out instead of laying in the bottom of the pan.
Use a quality oil and a NAPA Silver or Gold (made by WIX) or WIX filters as the filters are very important as is the oil. both cheap when you consider what they protect.

Since 1963 you have never heard of or used a screwdriver to break a filter free?
Its a common practice. Even "professionals" who change oil all day know about and use it because its effective.
I guess using a piece of pipe on a breaker bar is wrong too... Or fire to break a bolt free.

I've done the screwdriver method as well, works fine but it's messy. Aim high and don't damage the mounting threads, easy peasy.
After having to do that, I learned the trick of using sandpaper around the filter while using a filter removal tool. Works 100% of the time.
I really wish all filters came with a grippy top, it's the only good thing about Fram filters.
