It is much more important to just change the filter yourself and not have heavy-handed clown mechanics gangk it all up...
Seriously, a Cherokee XJ is about the easiest thing to change the oil and filter on... You can just about do it in a suit and not get dirty...

Good oil can outlive the filter by quite a bit, so you might even just change the filter by itself in between change intervals. They are like $8 and cheap insurance...

Don Juan said "Drinking is a lousy piece of joy" How about "A screwdriver is a wonderfully messy solution"
I wouldn't hand tighten a filter as tight as I could. Just firm will do, something like 1/4 to 1/3 turn after it hits?..I forget the rule of thumb.

Since 1963 you have never heard of or used a screwdriver to break a filter free?
Its a common practice. Even "professionals" who change oil all day know about and use it because its effective.
I guess using a piece of pipe on a breaker bar is wrong too... Or fire to break a bolt free.

You need to read my post and what it said. I have NEVER seen a professional use a screwdriver to change an oil filter and if I did I would never have ANY type of work done there not even a car wash. Were all of these "Professional's" you speak of working under shade trees? If not it speaks volumes for their work.

My girlfriend's 98 Outback is much easier. Not saying the XJ is hard, but the oil filter on an XJ still requires some reaching and can be a little messy. That Outback is stupid easy and mess free for oil changes.

Remember, the filter threads face forward if you are looking at it from the front it is reversed, turning toward the block (from above) is counter-clockwise for the filter.

A cherokee I bought a while back had as a flip had the tightest filter I had ever experience. I'm not one to just starting beating, cutting, or stabbing things with screwdrivers when I can't get them off so I turned to my father-in-law. I tried the special wrenches and everything. He quietly handed me what appeared to be vise grips with a bike chain. Clamped those babies on there and it came right off.

How the hell is this still a tread bwahahahahah. I just use the fram ratchet oil filter. Put on, rotate, ratchet tightens, filter loosens. Maybe a neighbor of yours can put some weight into it

On my comanche the jackass previous owner had the filter on there so tight the screwdriver tore right though it. Used a filter wrench and the screwdriver and still no luck. Ended up pulling the oil filter adapter off, putting it in a vice and using a pipe wrench on it.
