I was thinking it was going to break something while coming off. I will try that jumping on the bumper while pulling thing. We may look crazy but the neighbors already think that

CORRECTION:
There are no 4 screws at the bottom inside. The lower portion of the plastic is held in by door panel clips like on the doors. So just grab and yank away...

Oh, it's gonna prob still break cuz of the screws located on the sides of the hatch that you can only get at when it's open...

At least I haven't told him yet so he is still prepared for the breakage. Plus we tried the jump up and down on the bumper and that didn't work. I also told him to put a jack under the hitch, jack it up and try to open it. I told him to put the front wheel on the curb and try and do it with the other side as well. Worth a shot before you break stuff I suppose.

You can try pushing the hatch in while lifting the handle then pulling right away, mine worked like that for a bit...

we'll try that as well, is the root of this problem just a bad alignment, or is it a bad latch mechanism. So we can fix the problem when we get it open.

once you get the panel off, you will see the latch mech., and more importantly, the adjustment pieces. I think they just wear out over time and need a lil adjustment...I havent had a problem with mine since I went thru all of this

No new parts needed...There's a TON of adjustment built in on it. You'll be surprised when you get it open...All it is, is a little locking retainer clip, and a rod that locks into another little clip. Just move it to adjust. It's that damn simple. It's literally more work putting the interior panel back on than it is to adjust the handle...

Hahaha, figures a simple think like this could be such a pain. Bummer it happened to my brother, but it led me to lube mine up and it works so smooth.

I'd take those 4 screws out now while it is working, that's what holds the top of it in place and the reason it kinda breaks... I did that to mine just in case it happens again.

Good point, I told my brother not to put them back in. I think I will do something to hold it there like some Velcro to keep it from moving around or rattling.

My hatch started doing the same thing right after I brought my Jeep home after I purchased it. I took it apart, saw the lever that pushes on the mechanism was just sliding off, adjusted it some and it opened the next few times and just stopped working. Then for laughs yesterday (it's been below freezing and snowing here in PA since Wednesday) I tried opening it and it worked amazing. Thought it was funny that it opened fine but my doors were frozen, haha.
