Stupid question about Transmission fluid level
Alright so i have a very stupid question. Im having a hard time reading the dipstick on my jeep i can see there is fluid on it but i cant tell if it is just residual from the tube or the actual fluid level. i just ask because it not super clear to me and i dont want to end up overfilling it. And i know there is transmission fluid leaking from somewhere under the car.

No question is stupid when in may come down to spending bucks on repairs just because you didn't ask.
From your pic it looks a bit over but what does the other side of the stick look like? Whether checking oil or tranny fluid I look at both sides. I'll usually find a defined fluid line on one side or the other.

Like EZEarl said it looks a little over. But when you checked it, did you check it when it was at normal operating temp and idling in neutral? That is how it is supposed to be checked. If not it will show a different level which could be why it's a little high.

What i do is sit it on a paper towel as soon as i pull it out. It looks high, but on the paper towel, you can see where the heavy fluid stopped, and where the rest is just residual fluid.
Not sure if this is accurate, but it works for me, as it is a pain in the ***** to read the fluid.
Full operating temp, level ground, shift thru all the gears, put in neutral, pull E-Brake, Check after it has idled for at least one minute. That is my process for checking... then do the paper towel thing. But dont just wipe in on the towel, i mean sit the towel somehwere flat, then just sit the dipstick on it, making sure not to let the fluid run

Thanks for the advice guys, and yes it looked a little over to me too but it is also very lightly coated, my pervious vehicle was a silverado and extremely clear if it had fluid or not. I first noticed it because the transmission seems to be shifting harder then it was 2 months ago when i first got her. This picture was after it was up to temp and rolled thru the gear but was put in park. Now i know there is a leak in the system because iv found small amounts of fluid in various places, and after repeating this today, but doing it correctly by putting it in neutral it ends up looking about the same.
So if its leaking then how could i have too much fluid, and how can i be sure its not just fluid in the tube wiping it as it comes up

Unless your checking the fluid within a fews minutes after adding some what your seeing on the stick isn't what is on the tube sides. As far as the leak goes it must not be much of one BUT eventually it would show low on the stick. Best be finding it.
The hard shifting could be the TV cable needing to be adjusted.

That paper towel, (or tissue) trick can be handy. I just showed it to a red/green colorblind buddy last month. As a semi-pro, never being able to find the hood latch, or read that stick doesn't make points!
