swapping to D44's got a question
so i'm swapping to dana 44's front and rear. i've got the front already in hand. gotta make a few "adjustments" to make it a bolt in affair. and i know where a few rears are sitting right now. my question is this. will i be able to use my stock driveshafts with these axles? i'm pretty sure that the u joints are the same. if not i can find a bastard u joint that will fit. but will i be able to use the stock drive shafts? anyone got an answer?

Depends on what kind of vehicle you get your D44s out of. Defferent Manufacturers used different sized yokes and U-joints for different applications. If your D44s are from a Jeep vehicle, then you might just be golden. I know that a rear D44 made for an XJ can be sorced from an 87 XJ. That is where I got my rear D44 and it was a straight up bolt in job, putting it into my 91.

Any front D44 you try to put into your XJ is gonna require cutting off old brackets and welding on new. There was never an OEM REAL D44 made to bolt right into an XJ. The older model TJ Rubicon "FAKE" D44 front axle will bolt in, I believe but, the only part of that axle that is D44 spec is the diff. Everything else is D30 spec.

yeah i know that the brackets and everything will have to change...and i got my D44's from a waggy. so i'm pretty sure that the driveshafts will bolt right up though, was just wanting some second and third and fourth opinions...

should both be 1310 u-joints right? I would think you would only have to worry about the length. front will be fine, depends on what you have in the back now and if you have a sye or not.

from what i've been told lately from a good friend of mine that is going fullwidth is that as long as the axle is a Dana 44, not a chevy equivalent or etc.... its a DANA axle then the yokes are the same... he's funning a fullwidth D44 from an older for ford and his stock front d-shaft works fine... i also have another buddy that is running another Dana 44 from another older ford but different model and the yoke is still the same....
if its not for what-ever reason (PO went with a larger yoke) just take one off any other D44 axle cuz the out-put shafts are all the same spline so you'll be alright
as far as D-shafts lasting (not breaking) it depends on what kind of driver you are on the trails.... (heavy foot with-out a care) then they will break
a little cautious and careful you'll be fine... if your gonna swap the motor out for something bigger (350 or w/e) then bigger d-shafts 4 sure..
my rule of thumb is not a lead food, and using the same 4.0 I6 power as always and you'll be fine

thanks for the advice guys...i'll be sure to post up some pics when i'm done and yeah, they're gonna both be DANA 44's. i've got the C 8.25 in there now so i'm thinkin that the length will be just about the same. as far as the motor is concerned...i'm gonna turbo it.

you said you got your d44s out of a waggy and so did i but i was wondering how it went with the driveshafts. i just put the front 44 in and the stock driveshaft fits i think. how did you do the rear? i have read that with a hack an tap and a stock front driveshaft will work for the rear. Will it work what did you do.
