SYE question, '99 XJ
Ok...so all these years I've never known that in 98-01 they made the slip yoke external. Today I found this out after buying a '99. So what do I have to do for a SYE?

Actually started that around 96. SYE works the same way except hack and taps are a lot cheaper for the external models. Full SYEs are the same regardless of output since they replace it.

Hmmm well that's good to know. About how much cheaper are they? Oh also, are the 231 output shafts the same for internal and external? Or is the external just longer?

Think they are about the same size and just for compairason the RE hack and tap for 95 and older is $190 and 96 and newer is $100. Decent chunk of change if you ask me.

hack and tap
save yourself a lot of trouble buy the shaft anp pull tcase and install then just get a nother front driveshaft from xj from junk yard and get lengthened

I know a lot of people run front shafts in the rear but the tube is thinner than a stock rear shaft and I've personally seen them twist and tear apart. You will need to replace all 3 u-joints and service the dual cardon joint and have it shortened and by the time you're done you're about 50 bucks shy of buying a new shaft.

the rear shaft is bigger but the tube is a lot thinner steel than the smaller front tube that is a lot thicker and now days 50 bucks is 50 bucks

Might want to recheck that cause all the front shafts I've seen were thinner walled than rears and 50 bucks is nice but when you twist that shaft you'll wish you had spent it the first time not buying another shaft. If it's not wheeled it won't be a problem though.

im running one on my xj right now with 38s not little tires and a twisted drive shaft is a lot cheaper to fix than gears or axles

the ony reason i did mione was to get more angle in the rear im sitting on 10.5 lift going to 12 soon i ran mine for 5 year with 7.5 lift with slip yoke never had a prob did drop crossmember though the only bad thin about the slip yoke is you cant drive with out the yoke if you bust a ujoin or rear shaft all the fluid runs out if you have to drive on the front to get home been there bone that with other 4x4s ive owned

Could be wrong here but in the process of doing the same thing and all locals have all told me to use a front shaft out of a grand with a V8. They said its the right length and same strength for the application. Because ot the V8 its thicker walled to handle the power and longer. Its what I planed on doing. Any one know the pros and cons to that approach. I know I will still need to be vary selective in condition and replace the u-joints.
