Default Taking a '97 to '01 Mirror Apart

I was fortunate that my '00 XJ came with heated mirrors.
One thing that bugs me from time time is that my driver's side mirror is slightly scratched. Not just one line but like somebody cleaned it very lightly with steel wool or a scuff pad. Has swirls in it lets say.
90% of the time I don't even notice it. But from time to time I will catch it just at the right angle and see it. Have said it before and will say it again. OCD is a *****.
So in my travels I have grabbed some driver's side mirrors. One not heated and 2 that were. The second heated mirror came with the a set of 4 doors, in black (my Jeep is black), that I picked up for $100. My passenger side doors are not in the best of shape at the bottom. While these are not rust free they are better then what I have.
So now the problem lies in the housings. One is pretty decent shape scuff wise. But the one on the Jeep is in better shape.
So I got curious.
How does a mirror come apart?
Fact is pretty easy.
Followed the instructions here I found with a quick Google search:

http://www.wjjeeps.com/mirrors2.htm

Different Jeep but still applies.
It does require a little force. I managed to take apart one of the heated mirrors and the non heated mirror without busting the tabs.
Kind of surprised with 20 year old brittle plastic and all.
Instead of using a screwdriver I used one of the plastic tools from my panel removing kit.
To anybody who wants to upgrade their XJ to heated mirrors it is plug and play from what I have read.
If you want to make sure that the heated part works before you put them in you can check continuity between the two black wires in the red plug.
You will have to get some safety pins, wedge them in good (I did it from the back where the wires go into the connector), and check off them.
The pins are too small to get the tester point in.

I might take more of the mirror apart. There is still the motor to see.
If anybody is actually interested in seeing more of a mirror apart let me know and I will definitely do it.
I just wanted to see how it is put together. Can't imagine anybody else would care though. LOL.

I'm curious about the part of the 97-01 mirrors on the inside. I've read that 97+ mirrors are usable on pre-97's, but on my '95 it has the joystick style control. Looking at 97+ mirrors, it seems they did away with that style of control (I'm assuming the manual mirrors adjust by directly pushing on the mirror part), so is it just a flat trim piece on the inside?
I have been contemplating the mirror replacement (both sides on my '95 are half-way to falling off and the driver's side is pretty much useless) and was hoping to go to 97+, but I'm guessing I'd have to hit the junkyard for the inside trim piece without a big hole for the joystick control.

Here is the thing. To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a '97 and up XJ that has manual mirrors. Even the "SE's", think that is what they are called, have power mirrors. I am talking XJ's with no power windows, door locks, most likely idiot lights on the cluster, not even a rear defogger have power mirrors. I have seen factory bezels for '97 and up with just one switch (rear wiper) with 2 blanks and one with no switches, all blanks, and be willing to bet even those had power mirrors.

Rockauto lists manual mirrors for a 97 XJ with Mopar part numbers:

Shows what I know. Took some digging but I did find them in my '97 to '99 parts catalog.
It almost looks like RHD versions have manual remote mirrors:

55156024AC 1 B, U Black Manual Remote, Right
55156025AB 1 B, U Black Manual Remote, 1997 XJ, Left
55156025AC 1 B, U Black Manual Remote, 1998 XJ, Left

https://www.factorychryslerparts.com...5156024AC.html

Appears just '97 and '98 for all Jeeps though. No manual mirrors in '99 and up.
The "B" and the "U" above are designations for RHD 2 or 4 WD.
Now what you need to do is get those housings and swap glass from American XJ's onto them.
Cause the left side would have that "Objects appear closer" lettering cause of the RHD.

I had to go into my front doors so I was going to plug in all those mirrors to see if the motors work.
I could not separate the connectors to try them out. Instead of breaking something I bailed on trying.
Maybe I can check them by just looking at a wiring diagram and throwing a 12 volt run source on it.
Not sure how this would work without the switch though.
Maybe find out someday.

Oh and what started me going down this road.

Took a picture of the scratches on the mirror that is on the Jeep.

My 95 is a good old American LHD... I actually bought it in Connecticut since there were no viable 5-spd's closer than northern CT (and Groton is north central MA, 10 min. away from the glorious freedom of NH).

I figured that but if I am right and RHD versions do come with the little joystick to adjust you might be able to work it out.
