Temp Sending Unit

Temp Sending Unit
My gas mileage has gone through the roof and was doing great before. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 inline with the high output engine arrangement. My engine light came on and says the temp sending unit is bad. My friend said that it tells the engine how to mix fuel based on temperature. Is he correct? If I am going to go buy some parts I want to get the right ones in one trip. Also what other things can effect my mileage besides the obvious tires and tune ups? Other than the usual maintenance water pump alternator so on so forth the engine is a jewel you can stand next to her and not even tell its running. I have no complaints I just see alot of potential in the longevity of the truck, and I would like to explore upgrading certain areas.

Usually if the gas mileage starts going south it point to the O2 sensor going bad and wont always throw a code. O2 sensor is what the computer reads to adjust fuel/air mixture based on exhaust gas. Its also a good idea to change the temp sending unit so you dont over heat by accident.
