Hey, just a thought. Look under the hood and look at your battery, is that where the smell is coming from? I remember when I had an old ford ranger the charging system was actually overcharging the battery, which was causing all the acid inside to boil over and making a really gross moldy/rotten egg smell come through the vents when i turned the heater on. Made me feel extremely nauseous. Anyways check that out, just be careful if you handle the battery, and get that alternator tested and/or replaced! good luck

No i didn't get the PM about the videophone. I have one but never use it. My gf does from time to time....
I send you PM done. Anyway I did took out under that where fan motor is and glovebox. That it. But your year model is different than mine. Its 1993. Also I would like to check your cat emission might be bad. It make you confuse if it is cat or heater core. It is very trick. I got high flow cat on mine and smell to rich and totally different than stock cat. It does burn my eyes sometimes. But Im used it.

Default Think I have the same problem

I just had the same type of smell. Check to see if the smell happens on the other blower speeds. My `98 had lost speed 1 and 2 before it got it. The other day I was warming it up got in and thought it was going to light on fire. By the time I was to work about 20 mins speed 3 had stopped working, but speed 4 works fine without any smell. Someone told me that the wiring to the blower controller has 4 wires and as the plastic melts off the wires it makes a bad smell and then the speed that's linked to that wire stops. Now what makes the plastic melt off the wires....................

"what makes the plastic melt off the wires"

that would be some kind of faulty component, most likely the blower motor or whatever controls it. (relay, resistor, etc)

I'm going to dive into the passenger footwell on friday (before I lose speed 4) I'll tell you what I find. I already have (came with the Jeep) a repair wiring pigtail for the controller end. So I'm hoping thats it. On a side note My wifes Saab made the same type of smell when 2 of the plastic plugs on the blower wiring harness started to melt. The smell was somewhere between burning cigerette fillters, hot mold, and melting plastic.

Sounds like the blower resistor pack... Full speed (speed 4) doesn't have a resistor attached to it, so it's probably safe to run, but I'd think there was a problem near the resistor area, or the blower motor is starting to draw more current than necessary...

Well what I was told by the last owner about why 1 and 2 didn't work turned out to be wrong. The cause of my smell and the stopping of speed 3 was the blower resistor pack. I pulled it out yesterday and it was totally encased in rust!!! After a heavy cleaning with electrical cleaner speed 3 came back for about 10 secs. before a very small fire started on the resistor wires. Oh and the smell from the fire was the smell I was smelling before speed 3 stopped. On the bright side its easly to get to and cheap to replace about $40 in my area.

One other note. My 94 gets a bad smell in it once in a while and i narrowed it down to the notorious cracked exhaust manifold where the two sides join before the manifold joins the exhaust pipe. The PO put on a new manifold thats not got many miles on it, but it doesnt have the expansion joints. If I let it idle and warm up, the smell gets pretty rough. If you wait till you take off down the road, it doesnt fill the cab as bad. Got to replace that real soon.
