I just emailed Dale asking him if it was possible to check the Diodes in the coil using the Diode checking feature of my multimeter.

Edit: This is what I got back:

Ken,

You could try that, but I don’t think it will work. Generally these diodes have a rating of about 4Kv. To get up to the 4,000 volt number that they take diode die (pieces of the silicon wafer) and stack them up. That way the forward voltage drop is on the order of 4 or 5 volts because it is really 0.6v times the number of layers. Your meter will be confused by this. Also there is the series of the coil secondary winding.

Mike

Is a diode a "one way valve" or BI ?

Makes my head hurt. I barely understand points/condenser. Old azz caveman.

Yes, sort of a check valve for current/voltage. Thing is, there are a zillion types of diodes for various applications...... Simple applications would be like using four for a rectifier bridge etc..

How to test diodes.

Of course you need a meter that can test diodes....

One thing you can do is eliminate the coil rail altogether and install a coil pack from an 02 dodge viper. Here are pictures from the install in one of my 01's. the cost was about $70 to do the conversion.

Default Viper coil pack

I know this thread is a bit old, but I'm hunting down a potential coil problem in my 00' XJ.

What advantage do you see in the Viper coil system over the Cherokee rail?

Curious.
