Default Thermostat housing STILL leaking after .....

Hey guys,

My 98 XJ was overheating, so I figured it was the thermostat. Replaced that. still overheating, replaced water pump, did great for a day or so. NOW i'm leaking fluid from the thermostat housing. Found a housing, replaced it, and STILL leaking fluid.

So, good t-stat, water pump, and housing. What now? Is it a clog?

Thanks

Could be a clogged radiator. When was the last time you had the system flushed?

As for the leaking...probably just a bad seal there. Or the tstat is in upside down.

Did you sand it down before you installed the thermostat?

Yup I sanded it down and made sure all the debris was gone. This is the 3rd time of cleaned it off and re-sealed it.

I've had the XJ for 2 years and flushed it once. Probably 18 mos. ago. It will spike now, then go back to 200-220. Just leaking all over.

I had to reinstall my t stat 2 times. So, i sanded it off one more time and applied the gasket glue and t stat and let it sit till the next day (waited for it to setup). And it finally worked. So, my question is how long did you let it setup?

Did u apply a thin film of RTV on both sides of the new gasket?.....bolts just snug? It's easy to over-tighten the bolts thus cracking the cover/cutting the gasket.

That's a good point NorCal. Maybe I should just let it sit overnight and let it sit before I try starting it. I prolly let it set for 15min

Yep, don't overtorque it or you're going to have a bad time

If not it could be a bubble in they system. Maybe a small leak somewhere.
