Default Tie Rod Diameter

I am looking for the OD of the stock tie rod. Going to sleeve it with DOM/HREW/anything I can find (cause I can get scrap for free) untill I get $300/$400 to do it correct. I know its aint "safe" this is a trailer queen just want a temp and very cheap fix so I can drive it if needed. Thanks yall.

Get a V8 tie rod, adjuster sleeve, and tie rod end from a parts store. It'll be way better and still fairly cheap.

I looked it up and its still in the $50 range. I dont want to throw $$ into it when I am gonna do 1 ton as soon as I can afford it. I might just put the hi lift handle on it so I can move it if needed (thats how I got off the trail).

Go pick up a ZJ TRE from the boneyard. There like 15 or some and there solid drilled and tapped. No tubing.

There's lots of Jeeps running around with a HI LIFT handle tack welded over it as an emergency repair.

The worst part is welding a decent hunk of ERW to the thin stock materiel - it'll break/bend there.

DOM is too brittle to make a new one - you need some flex
DOM - Drawn Over Mandrel work hardens it too much.

I don't know what kind of scrap I have, but it's a temp repair. I just want to be able to move it/drive it if necessary, until I get "1 ton" steering. I might not even weld it on, but I figure it can't hurt. The hi lift handle got me the rest of the way out of not ez trail.... Long story short, it's free, temporary, and will hold me until I get $$...

If DOM is too brittle why do so many companies offer steering upgrades with DOM tube?

JCR is the first coming to mind, I have their OTK kit and its DOM.

"""""If DOM is too brittle why do so many companies offer steering upgrades with DOM tube?""""
(Refer to PT Barnum's famous quote.)

Yes, DOM is brittle. Try bending it in your tube bender, then look close at the bend - use a little acid to etch it - stress cracks all over!
Now try bending it back!

The steel is the same as ERW, just the DOM has been pulled through dies to make it rounder - rounder does not make it stronger in this kind of application. The pulling process work hardens the steel. Then when it flexes the hard steel cracks. ERW bends a few more times before developing those same cracks. Do a little research.

Just because some companies offer it - doesn't mean it's good. Case in point - Smitty Built makes lots of stuff - but look at all the complaints.
Some even make roll cages out of it!
There's even aluminum tie rods and drag links out there! They are strong and light, but they work harden real fast!

It may be OK for the street, but not really for serious off roading where it takes a beating.

Currie seems to make the strongest, but even then I've broken 2 of them. They are big solid forgings!

Schedule 40 - even 60 - WATER PIPE? You've got to be kidding!
