Default timing chain marks

ok i decided to fix my front cover leak, figured id put a new timing set in while in there. i set the engine a tdc, the rotor is pointing at number one, when i pulled the cover the dot on the cam sprocket is 180 degrees away from the dot on the crank sprocket, the new timing set lines up the same, cam dot 180 away from crank dot. normally these point at each other. is this how they are set on a 4.0? or has some one altered something on this motor? if so.. what if i lined them up? would that put the valve and ignition timming 180 out? or is the cam the same 180 over, just flip the rotor around 180?

i did test run it before reassembling, it does run, im just curious why the marks dont line up, when on any other engine they line up for tdc. is the the cam mark supposed to be 180 out from the crank mark at tdc?

tdc and dist rotor @ #1 have nothing to do with it when lining up the timing gears. dot to dot is the way to go. that way your're sure not to be off a tooth.
sounds like you got lucky for the most part, if it were me i would ck for proper dot to dot before i put the cover back on just to make sure it's not off a tooth.

how many miles did you have on the old chain? was it streched a fair amount or not?

the truck has 192k+ miles on it. yeah the chain was stretched, you could hear it rattle, my intentions were to fix the drip drip drip of oil from the front of engine, replaced the chain sprockets and damper. since i was in there. yeah when you line the dots up, the rotor is 180 away from number 1, i installed the chain as it set with the crank on tdc and the rotor on number one. which like i stated earlier the cam dot was 180 away from the crank dot. (i did line the dots up before installing everything). and of course the rotor was 180 out. i ran it it ran fine, put it all back together, runs good, no oil leaks, mission accomplished. i just find it odd with this engine, most engines when you line the dots up your rotor is pointing at number one, not this one. well its done and no problems.
