Timing chain snapped
Hello, i recently ran into an issue with my 92 4.0 l6 motor, at first thought it was a piston or something but then i pulled the oil pan and saw metal in the pan i recognized the metal as timing chain so then i pulled the head to check all of that jazz it all seemed good, im now confident that it was the timing chain, although my question is what would cause the chain to snap? Also the bottom timing gear teeth are all ripped of from the timing chain snapping, can someone help, wanna know what could have caused it before i put motor back together, thanks

Old age can cause it t fail. After all it is a moving part and moving parts tend to fail. The chain could also have been stretched and running it like that could also can cause it to chew up the gears.

That makes a big difference. How was it running before it snapped? Was it making any kind of rattle or strange noise from the front of the engine? The only reason I have seen one that new snap, was the gear wasn't pressed all the way in to place. It cause the chain to bind and it snapped. It was on one of my brothers cars that he put a new chain on and didn't seat the gear all the way into place. The only other thing I could think is the chain was defective.

You now have little metal parts running around in your engine. Yay!
You also don't know if you screwed up the valves or bend the camshaft because you can't see that just by looking at it.
Time for a full rebuild.

Depends where the metal ended up. If it simply fell into the pan then no real issue.
Possibility of defective chain. Or like the others said, cam or gear problem.
