today's the day
We decided to change the cam from the original motor, put the dist back to original and the timing set from the original motor into the new motor. It did something good cause its running smoother, but still has a backfire. Not near as bad, it is running on its own, not shutting itself off, not retarding and advancing like it was and its taking the throttle.
We forgot to block off the egr again so the efforts to set the timing tonite were useless cause its got the bad vac leak (egr broke and stuck open). By the time we realized it was after dark and all parts stores were closed. We'll be plugging the hole tomorrow and trying to reset timing.
Does anyone have an 88 that could look at the dist cap and tell me where the #1 plug position is since there are 2 different positions for the inline 6?

It will be up and running tomorrow. All of it will end up being the cam and dist gear did not line up nor did the timing set gears. I basically bought a motor and replaced it with everything from my old motor. I spend the money and 3 weeks on a motor that I changed all but the block. if you ask me it was such a waste.

I dont think it was that much of a waste because the most of the main internal parts still have less miles now then before and should give you years of enjoyment.
I just want to see that thing running and covered in mud like yucky clay mud that will teach it

forensically speaking ...today's the day !
Oh, yeah ... couple of people hit, or came close to hitting, the real problem along the way. In this case, there was an extrordinary amount of 'mix and match' that got mixed but didn't match so good as well. This practice made it just that much harder to get to the bottom of it.
This extremely difficult case also demonstrated and proved two opposing concepts: The limitations of internet diagnosis and repair AND the power of the internet to diagnose, ie, the power of pooled intellect and talent. Very interesting.
There was also 'the ego factor' that you mentioned a few times too, Karen. I think perhaps that had you been the only 'commander in chief', there might have been fewer circular proceedures; ie., ye ole 'too many cooks in the kitchen' syndrome. No offense meant to anyone who tried to help either.
Anyway ... looking forward to a sound clip of that motor running ... lol. Have a fun day

today we have cylinder #2 not firing at all and #5 fires a couple sparks then stops. Why? What could be causing this?
