If it was broken the thing wouldnt run as the cam and valves wouldnt be opening or closing. And you would most likely have some damaged pistons and valves from the open valves coming into contact with the piston.

OK got that - makes sense - during crankin Iwould assume it would make some clanking noises as the chain would be flopping around insode the cover.
How about if the chain jumped a tooth onthe sprocket?
Would it start, and run like crap, or woudl the timming be too far off o start?
I have fuel, spark, and no start.
It cranks a little slow, and sounds a bit different than it used to.
Sounds as if it is struggling a bit.

If it jumped teeth then I believe the engine would run rough or not start at all. You might try loosening the distributor and rotating it while someone tries to start it. Of course mark exactly where it was before you start moving it. If it starts then most likely the chain jumped... if it doesnt then something else might be wrong.

pre runner thanks
I am off of work this week so I willhave a chance to get working on this.
My Jeep has been down for nearly a month, and I am jonesing for it.
I replaced my CPS with the clutch a few months ago but folks are pointing to the CPS as a possible issue. I will test it today for proper resistance, and voltage during cranking.
I only have 142K on this jeep, I would think that the chains would last longer.
Thanks
