nope, its not all about whats in the vehicle.

I have a buddy who has a TJ on 32" BFG Muds...and its decently quite riding down the road.

I have another buddy who has an almost identical TJ but he's on 32" Dunlop Mud Rovers....and good god are they loud.

Tread pattern and tire design are HUGE factors in road noise

I've seen an F350 on 33" mud tires of some type on the highway going 65....and they were loud as hell, but I've been in and XJ with 33s going 65 down the highway and it was decently quite

the noise you hear from the tires is the air getting sucked into the tread basiccly. think about it. road tires don't have gapping holes and thier quiet on the other hand mud tires have huge gaps between tread. make sence?

its more a thing called lug slap than anything else. basically the big flat lugs slapping against the pavement makes alot more noise than the small lugs found on regular tires.

oh, well yes, but on two rigs that are identical in those aspects. two different tires will be different. a set of BFG muds will be quiter than Maxxis Bighorns

I've actually tried this, ran some bfg muds then some maxxis muds and some tsl boggers and the maxxis muds seemed about as loud as the boggers.............I run BFG A/T now. 35k miles and still look new

BFG muds are quiet compared to Maxxis Bighorns.

People can argue with me all day long about tread pattern not making a difference, bottom line is that it does. if it didn't then Mud tires would be just as quite at ATs or street tires.

I ran the older 31" MT version when they were Hi-Tec Retreading on my S10 Blazer for over 2 years. They were great on and off road. Road smooth and nice and noisy like a MT is supposed to. They were great off road as well.

I have not owned any since but I've heard they have the process down even better now.

If I weren't going to a bigger tire size I'd definitely invest in a set of treadwrights, they're cheaper than new tires, eco-friendly and just as good as new tires from everything I've read.

big rigs only run them in the winter if you watch when it starts to warm up youll see more and more tread strips from semis..those are retreads my uncle drives for a living this came strait from him and experienced 30 yeat road vet

Just wanted to confirm this, warm weather indeed makes retreads peel off the tire. If you want proof just go to your nearest interstate highway during the warmer months of the year. Around here you can literally see retreads laying in the ditch from where they have come off the tire. I personally don't trust them, but to each his own.
