Default Tires at auction

There is a local tire shop going out of business and having an auction this weekend. I am hoping to get a bargain on some new tires. My 96 XJ is stock height with steel wheels. I would like to eventually lift it 3" without any fender trimming and dont plan on wheeling it, but I will need new tires before I can afford to lift. My question is what size tires should I look for? I would like to get as large as possible without a lift, but I dont want it to look stupid after I lift it 3" either. Is there such a thing as a happy medium for this. I was thinking 30" or 31"s. Next question how wide of tires can I go with on my stock steel wheels? Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

30's would probably be better if you dont know when the lift is coming. They won't be a problem running at stock height, the 31s will be.

you could fit 31s on 15x7 wheels, but I wouldn't go bigger than that with those wheels

10.50s are perfect for you.30s are max without rubbing and no lift.31 or32 with lift.

If you set up your bump stops correctly then you can run a 32... Would probably have to keep the width down to 10.5/11.5 with some new control arms and fender well trimming... But you will definitely have a little rubbing without trimming the fenders... Whats your reason for going up in tire size just to run the street? It cuts mpg/performance on road... If you pulled your fenders then you could run a 33... This is only if you set up your bump stops correctly though... You would also have to have less backspacing on your wheels if you are wanting to run a wider tire without any trimming or rubbing... You could also get wheel spacers to solve that problem...

Will 10.5's fit on my stock rims?
Millitaryman, my reason for bigger tires is so that they dont look too small after I lift it. I am hoping to get some tires now and lift it before the snow starts to fly. Not sure if it will help much, but I need all the help I can get as far as clearance in the snow drifts on the gravel roads around here. I do an 80 mile paper route on the gravel every week and usually late at night. I dont wanna knock on someone's door after midnite and wake them up to pull me out. Plus I want to fix my saggin leafs, and figured I would lift at same time. These may all just be excuses just to justify spending money to look cool.
