Okay so I took my 91 Cherokee and I wanted to have the suspension and drive lines looked at. So this is what they told me....

Front track bar joint loose and rusted
Front Diff rebuild
replace front u joints
front unit bearings replace(both sides)
left side ball joints
rear drive line u joints

So besides the u joints and ball joints how hard is it to rebuild a front differential? I can do the ball/u joints myself but was wondering how hard it would be to do the diff. and the unit front unit bearings.

Thanks,
Roscoe

if you have never rebuilt a diff its not something you want to try on your own. axle outer bearings are easy.

yes, it did drive in amazing huh! So what I was feeling was a knocking in the left front around 50mph that was from the traction bar joint being loose. I knew there was some play in the steering but what lifted 4x4 doesn't right?... After getting it there and them telling me that I was very surprised. They told me there was a lot of play in the front end and it all need to be overhauled. They also want to shorten the front drive shaft to add more flex to keep it from jamming into the transfer case. I knew there was some stuff wrong with it but not that much. So I was just looking for some friendly advice on the matter. I am going to have them rebuild the front diff. to start and them I can start my list once I get it back.

whats wrong with the diff?
does it leak?
does the 4X4 work? if yes then who cares and drive the thing unless you have too much money and you wouldnt rather buy a cool bumper or something with the money

They input shaft is leaking and there is a lot of play when they take in shaft and try to rotate it left to right. They said that it is very dangerous to drive the whole front end could lock up it it broke.

a lot of play ,the frony shaft will turn a 1/4 inch or so back and forth between contact on ring gear teeth ts normal shorten shaft was the front shaft evey made longer there are different lenght shafts for xj fronts and leaking input shaft could be because of shaft being to long causing contact causing seal leak
