Exclamation Torque converter check engine light

So I bought a 99 xj with 113,000mi yesterday.

Today I am driving it home from work and the check engine light came on (figures :/)
I went up to auto zone to have the light tested and the code was Torque Converter Solenoid.

What does this mean? It appears to be running perfectly.

When the code was re-set it went away for a a few hours, then came back.

What should I be looking for and should I be concerned.

If this means the converter is bad, will my old one from my 96 bolt up?

Help?

You might take a look at the wiring to the trans. See that it looks like it's hooked up! All I know is that that third one "Locks" the Torque converter. I think I read if it remains locked, the engine will stall when you try to stop. (as if you didn't push in the clutch on a manual). Sorry, I can't say for sure. (I mean I read that, but am not sure it's correct). Also...solenoids can be changed after removing the pan, but again, not sure about THAT one, probably though.

Get the specific code by having it read for free at one of the big-box parts stores. Post the code up. Anything else is just a guess. Your Jeep is trying to tell you something and you're not listening.

"I went up to auto zone to have the light tested and the code was Torque Converter Solenoid."

Does it get more specific?

Since I do my own work I like having the Haynes manual. I actually have two, carry one. I think you can download the FSM here V, clumsy, but allot of data.
Cruiser is pretty sharp, Maybe he can help. Good luck!

P1740 TCC or OD Sol Perf A rationality error has been detected in either the TCC solenoid or overdrive solenoid systems.

To test torque converter lock up drive down the road at about 50 MPH. Keeping your foot on the gas tap the brake pedal. The RPMs should rise 3-500 RPMs. This is the convertor unlocking. 98 and newer seem to have the solenoids fail alot more than the OBDIs. The solenoids [3] come in a kit and are about 200 bucks.

Here is more info and procedures to test with a volt ohm meter. Its not to hard to test before droping the pan and changing them. Took me less then 2 hours with a coffee break in there.

If the codes come back I have found its the TCU. They are cheap and plentyful at the pick and pull.
