You are correct, it should not look like that. It should have a little cage-like tip with the sensor element inside the cage. That one looks like the cage/sensor tip has been ripped off...

As to whether or not that's causing your stuttering issue is for smarter minds than mine, but it certainly isn't helping.

Alright folks here's the latest..... New map sensor, New IAT sensor, tested CPS, Tested TPS, Cleaned IAC valve, Cleaned EGR valve, and new fuel filter. only thing that changed anything was the new IAT and that made things waaaayyyy worse. If i leave the IAT plugged in and rev the motor it stutters and backfires. Any help would be awesome. (oh and i did cruisers sensor ground test again and it came back fine.

I have a 98 cherokee and have had a similer problem. it would sputter and miss out sometimes and felt like the gas pedel was stuck but if u took your foot off than pushed the pedel back down it would be fine. Some times it would be a few times in a row but it never died out. it always did it at low speed and would be fine by the time i made it to the end of the street. It seemed to do it early in the morning so i figured it was a moisture electrical issue. I also drove it to the car wash one day after wheeling all weekend and not having any trouble and after i washed it the problem was real bad for about a mile. Today i go to run up to the store(temps dropped into the teens today maybe relivent?) and the radio started turning on and off than went dead and my abs light came on and it started running real bad i limped it a few hundred yards to a friends drive way were it now sits. for the last week or so the volt meter has been acting up the first time it happened the check gauge light came on and the volt meter showed no sign of life no matter how hard i poked at it lol so i turned around went home and put a meter on the battery running and off and everything looked good so i asumed the guage bit the dust when i started the jeep back up it worked this problem now comes and goes but does not affect driveablility. After work tonight i went out to work on it and the battery was completly dead but the negative temps sent me running for the house rather quickly.

A little off subjest but maybe not my cherokee was is a light colision with a mailbox and was "repaired" but ran well for about a year before this problem came about. i have replaced plugs wires cap and button in the past and it didnt fix problem i also replaced fuel pump a while back. It does all sorts of strange electrical things now that i really think about it. my windsheild wipers will make the radio cut out sometimes and my rear turn signals will both blink sometimes when turning left (i think its left). I have tried unplugging concetors in the past and it didnt help but i didnt do all of them. Tomorrow im going to go threw conectors and see what i come up with. I am not an automotive tech and fairly new to jeeping so bare with me.

Alright so today i did a fuel pressure check and that came back perfect. Also took the ignition control module and the coil out and had them tested and they tested fine. While i had them out i cleaned the connections and that didnt change anything. Just a recap of what its doing..... With the IAT UNPLUGGED it hesitates under light acceleration and runs really rich and hesitates and shudders around 1500 rpm. With the IAT PLUGGED IN it backfires and runs really rich. Any help or ideas is much appreciated.
