Then you post pulling large trailers with heavy equipment WITHOUT a problem. Had to make an assumption that you might know something.
Then went further back and found your "Lucky mine sucks" post.
What are you towing that makes it suck? Car trailer? Boat? Utility trailer?
How each one is loaded will effect how it will tow. If your trailer sways AT ANY SPEED it's loaded wrong.

You'll need to go as far down as to make your trailer sit level on the hitch.
If it is tilted too high the centre of gravity will be wrong and your trailer will sway.

Not a XJ, but I've pulled a 22" car trailer all over the place with all kinds of loads on it. XJs actually have a bit of advantage, IMO, when loaded right due to the leaves in the rear. The 5.9 has more than enough power, but the coils don't like a load at all.
x100 on educating yourself about what your vehicle can safely handle, or more importantly what the driver can handle. For medium duty loads, I think an XJ or ZJ for that matter makes a great tow rig.

Pontoons usually pull pretty goofy, they're pretty light except for the motor weight all at the rear. We pull our pontoon out of the water with the jeep only because its 4wd and none of our trucks are. Most pontoon trailers I've seen wouldn't be worth a damn pulling any distance.

Transmission would be toast in no time and there's no way the Jeep would be able to stop it.
There's no sense in pulling something that you can't stop in a reasonable amount of time.

I use the Jeep to move it around the yard, like I was doing in this picture, but I'd never hit the road with it.

It's an 18' 1996 Crest with a 50 hp Johnson. Goes a whopping 16 mph.
We just got it last month.
I've spent the last week adding a nice stereo system, lights everywhere, added a battery to the circuit and other little stuff.
