Default towing concerns

Anyone ever use a cherokee with the 4.0 engine to tow a 2000lb or so tent trailer--am wondering how well it performs and if there are overheating issues and what to expect in gas mileage//I have a 1996 Country with the tow packacke and am contemplating such a thing--thanks--George

I've towed a twin axle car trailer with 6 ATVs on it a few times and never had any overheating issues. And x2 on the overdrive. I was cruising at 60mph on the highway and it kept downshifting to keep its speed. And don't expect to get good gas mileage, it just wont happen

My father used our stock 99 sport to haul a 97 bayliner Capri. No overheating problems but the brakes smelled a couple times. It pulled it no problem but you could feel that it was back there if you catch my drift. The back was saggin' a bit but not major. We were pulling it at abou 60mph. In Georgia there are not very many hills but whenever we were on one it did downshift. This was back in 2002. You should not have any problems towing a 1 ton tent trailer.

Oh, ang gas mileage was poor also.

My first Jeep a Grand Cherokee 2001 4.0 2001 - 2006 I towed my Harley lots of times between Ky and Fl.. The trailer weighed 900lbs and the Harley weighed in a 685lbs. I towed at 70 on the interstate and got around 17 to 18 mpg. Lots of hills in Ky, Tn, Nc and SC., never a problem.

I tow a 6'x12' enclosed cargo trailer that has probably weighed north of 4,000 pounds a couple of times back and forth between San Antonio and Indianapolis and never had a problem with overheating of the tranny or the engine. I run a B&M tranny cooler and air shocks to help with the tongue weight. Everything else is stock and well maintained.

sounds like a class 2, a class 3 should be good up to 500 tongue, 5,000 gross weight,... Also that is with a properly equiped Jeep(trans cooler, brake controller, brakes on the trailer, etc)

I think that's what it said for load equalizing. I'd be skeered with the way they mount to a unibody. Owners manual sez 5000 though

2000 lbs...

ok, sorry...
Yes, just make sure your hitch and reciever are rated for that.

I haved towed other people cars on car dollys, on the highway at speed, with absolutely NO PROBLEM... AND I HAVE NO SWAYBARS!

Just remember that you arent gonna be able to STOP or accelerate like youre used too.

I hauled a 2000lb trailer, 4 people, rooftop carrier, and 2 100lb dogs with the 2.5L from Raleigh NC to Rochester NY with no overheating. I didn't push it over 65 mph and everything was fine.

and i have towed a 20 foot flat bed tandem axle trailer with a good stack of plywood with no problems of over heating. just longer stopping distance....

I also tow a fully loaded 5X8 uhaul trailer 370 miles and the beginning and end of each school year back and forth to home and school. and i actually get better gas mileage (partly cause i cant go as fast 80-85 so i lay off the pedal and stay with 70)
