Default Towing heavy load

So I have a 1994 xj with a 3inch rough country AAl on it and it has the AX-15 (5-speed tranny) and the np231. My question is How much can I tow? My friend wants me to tow a 1992 f150 2wd for him on a car dolly. Can the jeep handle this with out an catastrophic problems? I plan on staying off the highway and only going back roads and avoiding hills. Is this safe and will it eat up my clutch? Thanks, Shane.

The towing capacity is 5000 but I personally wouldn't push far past 2000. How long of a trip

Negative, 5000 lb max tow rating is only with the auto tranny w/auxiliary cooler. Manual tranny is 3000 lb, iirc. A full size p/u and dolly probably exceed 5000 lbs anyway.

North American tow rating on my 1999 AX-15 is 3500 lbs. In the UK they're all rated for 7000+.

2WD F-150 is about 4000 lbs. A car hauler that it will fit on should be about 2000 lbs.

You couldn't pay me to haul a full sized pickup on a car trailer with my XJ on a road. Maybe in 4L down to the other side of a yard. XJs simply do not weigh enough to control that load, nor do they have the braking power to make that anything like "safe". Even with a full brake controller for electric brakes I wouldn't do it.

you would be better off flat towing, as long as that is legal where you live and that the ford still has good brakes. I agree with Salad, don't **** up your life doing something stupid, it's way too much for the XJ to control.....Towing the weight is one thing, but Stopping and Controlling the weight is a totally different story. And my Sig is my proof I know what I'm talking about....LOL

The f150 is 4300lbs on its own plus the trailer a xj is around 3300lbs no way id tow something that out weights what's pulling it.

It would be about 50 miles or so, and it would be on a car dolly so that would only weigh like 100 - 200 pounds. Truck has no brakes hence the need for the tow, also flat towing isn't legal unless you have a bar or something between the vehicle. I believe we'll be using the kids dad's dodge work van instead that was if **** breaks it isn't my problem lol. But thanks guys I appreciate all the input!

Probably be cheaper to fix the brakes on the truck and just drive it.

I personally wouldn't tow more than 2000 lbs with mine. My XJ only weighs barely over 3000 lbs, not enough to safely tow much weight imo.

The truck has sat for the past 5 years so there are probably a few more underlying problems that will come out of the wood work in that 50 miles trip. Same thing happened with my XJ but I bought it from a neighbor so I could drive it home and use the E-brake not suggested but it works in a pinch. Thanks again for all the input guys. It's very appreciated.

Oh one of those little doodads where only the front wheels of the towed vehicle is up? I might take that at low speeds then. At that point I'd be worried most about braking.

50 miles? Lot less expensive to pay for a flat bed tow, verus a trip to the hospital or worse.
