Whatever you can SAFELY hook up to the ball, start, stop and control between point A and point B. Keep in mind the hills, traffic, and idiots that you will encounter on the trip, the condition of your motor, BRAKES, HITCH CAPACITY, trailer and the distribution of the load and how it is tied down. Consider if you had to stop or change lanes quickly if you would be able to do it without injuring you, your passengers, or someone else.

You could tow a 747 down a runway if no other planes were going to be on it. I have pulled a double axle car trailer with a 72 Chevelle on it down a level road in mild traffic. Stopping distance was more than doubled.

BE SAFE!!

You need excellent brakes if you're going to tow something.

Most people I know who tow trailers with a Cherokee would say 5000 lbs is too much weight. The Cherokee is too light to safely control much more than 2000 lbs.

The advantages of a Cherokee (relatively light weight and compact size) make it a BAD tow vehicle.

Sure, you can get 5000 lb Class III hitches for Cherokees, but the chasis (weight and wheel base) and brakes are simply not up to the task. The 4 L will get a 5000 lb trailer moving down the road, but cornering, sway control and braking are simply DANGEROUS at such loads.

So, limit yourself to 2000 lbs.....up to 3000 lbs at most if you have a double axle trailer with trailer brakes.

I think everyone has hit it pretty well.

it is not what it can tow it is what it can stop. and cherokees can barely stop themselves lol

I've pulled a 2 ton diesel wood chipper with no problems but i have the towing package and I clean and grease my brake slidders and adjust my drum brakes every oil change.... My jeep stops on a dime so, towing is no issue if your jeep is well maintained and also if you have added a leaf in the back, you should be fine.

I tow a 3500lb boat and the brakes are the worst part about it. It has plenty of power. I only tow about 5 miles each way, otherwise I would look into a full-size truck.
