Default TPS keeps going bad

okay guys this is getting frustrating. I have the normal 5 volt signal going to the throttle position sensor yet my throttle position sensor keep going bad. I've been through four of them in the last 2 years. with only about five thousand miles in those two years.this is on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 and automatic transmission. I have to keep a spare one in my glove box just for when it goes out on the road. Ideas?

Hang on. Are they testing bad with a multimeter or are you just getting codes and changing it out?

I feel your pain man, I went through 3 of them in one year and mine is a trail rig, first one I replaced was a house brand from Oreilly's, not really a choice I would normally do but I was on a wheeling trip and it died, next trip that one fell apart (broke in half). Swapped it and paid the difference for a BW one, it lasted several months, picked up Mopar one at the junk yard for a spare, fast forward about 6 months, it died, swapped in the used factory one. Knock on wood, still working. As far as them dieing I use the "it won't idle or shift gears until tranny pressures force it to"

Mdo, sounds like we're going through the exact same problems. And salad, as mdo said, the transmission doesn't shift until pressure is high enough, throws a code for TPS, and runs like absolute crap. Soon as changed out runs like a dream. starting to wonder if the computer could possibly be the culprit, sending out too high of a signal intermittently.

TPS ground might be flaky. Clean it up and see what happens.

Do you get a transmission code(s) (P07XX) at the same time as the TPS code? There is a transmission code associated with bad TPS inputs to the TCM.

When you change out your TPS you may have wiggled the TPS connector wiring enough to make a wire problem go away for awhile. Inspect the TPS harness wiring for chafing to bare wires, this includes the harness that comes out of the fuel injector wiring manifold and curves around to enter a larger loom. There have been cases where the harness gets damaged as the harness leaves the FI manifold by rubbing on the end of the fuel rail.

yeah I checked the wiring harness, I had read up on that problem and pulled the whole thing out and checked it all. all of the grounds as well.and as for the transmission code, unfortunately my reader is too stupid to read transmission codes. only engine codes.

One of the problems with using my pair of photos is that they tend to focus the viewer on the fuel rail exclusively. In fact the original photo I viewed for the misfire showed the wire harness being shorted at the ground stud on the head, visible in the first photo.

Suggest you use an arrow or circle to get the viewer to also look at that stud. IIRC the original short was on a similar stud on the passenger side? That photo has long since disappeared from the post.

Here's the 2009 thread: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/new...re-help-32066/

XJ1997 started the thread and has several photo links, most don't work. Perhaps XJ1997 still has the image?
